By Elly Smith, Nutritionist in Manly
Having a bloated tummy, feeling gassy or experiencing stomach pain puts a real damper on everything. Get to the bottom of why you’re feeling bloated with tips from our nutritionist.
Bloating is one of the most common symptoms I see in the clinic as a nutritionist and although bloating is common, it is not normal.
Why do so many of us experience this unpleasant and sometimes embarrassing symptom?
Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all response here, but here are some of the more common reasons for bloating.
Common Reasons For Bloating
1) Gut Dysbiosis.
This means you have too many “bad bugs” and not enough “good bugs” living in your gut. This can result in poor or incomplete digestion of certain foods. These partially digested foods then sit in your gut and ferment by the bacteria. This causes excessive gas production, flatulence, tummy pain and you guessed it, bloating.
We solve this by exploring why you have too many “bad bugs” and create a program to reintroduce the “good bugs” and improve complete digestion of food.
2) Food Intolerance.
Unlike an allergy, a food intolerance means that a person can eat a certain amount (this being different for each person) before an undesired response is seen. After you reach your tolerance threshold bloating occurs.
Common culprits include gluten containing grains, dairy foods (especially cows milk), eggs and certain types of carbohydrates and fibres. A nutritionist helps you work through a structured plan to explore who the offender/s may be and create a new diet that keeps your belly happy and un-bloated.
3) Eating Habits.
Maybe you eat too quickly and don’t take the time to chew your food properly and/or eat too much in one sitting? These can all place stress on your digestive system, contributing to poor digestion and ultimately bloating.
The first and most important step to treat
bloating is to identify the triggers.
There might be only one culprit or maybe there are multiple, which can sometimes be a little tedious. However, the joy and relief experienced once resolved far outweighs the discomfort and inconvenience of belly bloating!
